The question of whether most of us know the origin of our national anthem is often met with answers I would only term as vague.
The late Tom Mboya who was the then minister for constitutional affairs was tasked by President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta to assemble a team that would be responsible for coming up with a new symbol of unity. This happened right after independence.
The members of the team included Peter Kibukosya, Washington Omondi, George Zake, Graham Hyslom who was Kenya’s inspector of music and drama for the ministry of education and Thomas Kilume who was an apostle. What makes the national anthem seem so effortless when singing is that the tune was borrowed from a Pokomo lullaby. These amazing five people are nothing if not experts of creativity.
